Gogol and Moushumi are the typical representatives of the second-generation immigrants. However, there is a definite difference between them. At the end of the novel, Gogol realizes his national identity. He reads the book presented him by Ashoke, understanding what it has meant for his father.

Gogol and Moushumi were both rose by Bengali immigrants and they both have an artistic eye. They both graduated from top universities, and experimented with foreign relationships. Even so they had so much in common, the most important thing in common was that they both gave up trying to live their own lives to live the ideal life everyone expected of them.

This is particularly true of Moushumi; Gogol at least makes some attempt to reconcile the two halves of his identity whereas she cannot find solace in either being American or Indian.
